I was inspired by how nature takes over abandoned pockets of the city. There's something very empowering about tiny lifeforms pushing their way out of concrete walls and pavements.

About Ang Manileña from the official website:
Ang Manileña is a faux magazine and series of illustrations that aims to capture the zeitgeist of Metro Manila living from the Filipino illustrators’ perspective. It also aims to be a living archive of Filipino illustration in the present time.

Metro Manila is a complex and difficult city to live in, but is riddled with mundane beauty and its own culture all the same. This project was made to celebrate that, and to highlight and expand the visual language of being from Manila and of being Filipino.

This endeavor is inspired by The New Yorker and other faux magazines such as The Tokyōiter and The Parisianer, that similarly celebrate their namesake cities.
